Our communication is filtered through chat apps, our news intake\u00a0is filtered through\u00a0social media feeds, and even processes that are less obviously about information flows rely on algorithms to analyse, sort, and govern our behaviour. Whether in health care, education, or housing, digital providers are re-shaping how our interactions work.<\/p>\n<p>Media scholar Jos\u00e9 van Dijck refers to the result of these processes as \u2018the platform society\u2019. As <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/-ypiiSQTNqo?t=892\" target=\"_blank\">van Dijck explains in a 2016 keynote speech<\/a>, in the platform society, \u2018social, economic and interpersonal traffic is largely channelled by an (overwhelmingly corporate) global online platform ecosystem that is driven by algorithms and fuelled by data\u2019.\u00a0Together with her colleagues Thomas Poell and Martijn de Waal, she argue in <a href=\"https:\/\/global.oup.com\/academic\/product\/the-platform-society-9780190889777?cc=nl&amp;lang=en&amp;\" target=\"_blank\">their newest book<\/a> (2018)\u00a0that core actors driving\u00a0the platform society\u00a0are often commercial enterprises. These enterprises, like Facebook or Google, claim to merely act as service providers or facilitators of social interactions. And yet\u00a0such claims raise questions of who should then be held responsible for the at times detrimental outcomes that these interactions have, for instance when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=OjPYmEZxACM\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook\u00a0interactions aggravate hate and ethnic tensions<\/a> in ways that can contribute to real-world violence. Meanwhile, platforms like Uber are famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/01\/29\/technology\/personaltech\/uber-a-rising-business-model.html\" target=\"_blank\">restructuring the way employment works<\/a>, while accommodation and travel platforms like Airbnb are <a href=\"http:\/\/theconversation.com\/how-airbnb-is-reshaping-our-cities-63932\" target=\"_blank\">profoundly reshaping urban space and living<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What can we learn from East Asian contexts about such processes? How do social media platforms like WeChat, Line, or Kakao change interactions between people there? How do new payment platforms or transportation apps change life in East Asian cities and rural areas? What role do proprietary algorithms play, in these contexts, and how do diverse actors ranging from government agencies to consumers respond to the profound changes that the platform society has wrought?<\/p>\n<p>These are some of the questions that our graduate students in Asian Studies at Leiden University are debating this week, here on this website.
