Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research

The three-year research project Digital Nationalism in China: Sino-Japanese History in Online Networks is financed by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research, which awarded the primary investigator Florian Schneider a three-year Talent Scheme VENI subsidy. This VENI project, based at Leiden University and launched in early 2013, provides the framework for PoliticsEastAsia.com.

The NWO is the national research council in the Netherlands and has a budget of more than 500 million euros per year. NWO funds the research of more than 5000 scientists. The NOW’s budget for science funding is provided by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, as well as by other government ministries.

The NWO develops and realises research programmes together with researchers and other interested parties. These programmes sometimes address a societal issue. An idea for research can also emerge directly from industry. NWO ensures that funds are always available for curiosity-driven research, which is not tied to a particular theme. Also several NWO programmes focus on cooperation at a European or international level.
